去る９月20日木曜日、ウェブスター大学の日本文化の授業の一環として、日本の代表的な文化、茶の湯のデモンストレーションを行いました。図書館の会議室に俄か仕立てのお茶室をしつらえて、生徒さん約20名の前で茶の湯の歴史、概略、『和敬清寂』の精神などをレクチャーした後、薄茶風炉点前を説明を加えながらデモンストレーションし、その後、質疑応答の時間を設けました。ある生徒さんから『亭主がお点前をしている間、全くお客様にアイコンタクトをしていなかったが何故か？』などユニークな質問も飛び出しました。最後に生徒さん全員に、お菓子とともに自分で点てたお茶を味わって頂きました。少しでも日本の文化の美しさ、奥深さを分かってもらえたのではと思います。On Sept. 20th, we introduced The Way of Tea to the Japanese Culture Class at Webster University. Staged in their Library’s conference room with tatami mats and screens, we introduced the history and the ceremony’s four spirits – “wa-kei-sei-jaku”. More than 20 students enjoyed the Furo – the thin tea procedure of making tea. After the demonstration, students engaged us with such unique questions as “Why didn’t you make eyes’ contact to a guest during your demonstration?” At the end, all students enjoyed sweets and a bowl of tea. We hope they enjoyed the beauty and depth of Japan’s tea culture.
