宗純先生からアマンダに会った時の報告です。今年の9月セントルイスから裏千家京都本部『みどり会』に入学して、茶道を学んでいるわれらのホープ、Amandaに会いました。一人一人に与えられているという自転車で、待ち合わせ場所にますますほっそりとすっかり大人びたAmandaはやってきました。おやつのケーキを買って我が家へ。ケーキとコーヒーで、お家元のお膝元での日々を話してくれました。私たちにとっては雲の上の人々であるお家元坐忘斎さま、お家元の息子の敬史さま、娘の万紀子さまとお会いできる機会もあり, 鵬雲斎大宗匠は毎月スカラーシップをみどり会の生徒たち一人一人に渡してくださるのだそうです。お家元が近隣の寺社で献茶をされる時には、『おてつだい』をすることもあるそうです。月曜日から金曜日まで午前中は講義中心、午後は実技をみっちりと学び、『おとうばん』は早起きをして、午前のクラスの前にその日に使用する炭切りから始まり、床の間のお軸を選んでかけ、お花も選んで花器に活け、畳の雑巾がけや水屋の準備をするのだそうです。これまでに何回かお茶会も経験し、今はみどり会の生徒主催の『クリスマス茶会』に向けて、準備に忙しくしているとのこと。自分で削ったという茶杓も3本持参してくれました。お茶碗も手捏ねで作ったそう。この1年間できっとたくさんのことを経験し、学んでいくことでしょう。お夕飯を済ませて、門限の夜10時に間に合うように裏千家の寮へ帰っていきました。This is the report from Sojun sensei.I (sensei) met Amanda who joined Urasenke’s scholarship school “ Midori-kai” in Kyoto. She started the school this September.She came to see me by bicycle which Urasenke school provided to each student, looking more slender and a little more mature.We talked about her intriguing life inside the urasenke school and household. To my surprise and envy, she passes by Great Master DaisoshoHounsai and some of the top people regularly in everyday life.According to Amanda,Daisoshodirectly hands out scholarships to each student every month and she sometimes gets to assist him do kencha( tea offering) in the neighborhood temples.Every day students have lectures in the morning and practice tea ceremony in the afternoon. Beside those classes, students take turn to prepare charcoals, choose the scroll, arrange flowers, cleaning tatami mat, prepare the Mizuya(preparation room) and so on.She said she experienced theOchakai(tea gathering) several times already and now students are busy preparing for Christmas ochakai.Amanda brought three chashaku(tea spoon) she made to show me, and talked about the tea bowl she made by herself.I’m fully convinced that she will experience and learn a lot in one year.After dinner she left my home to make it to 10 o’clock curfew of her dormitory.Amanda, we are so proud of you and can’t wait to hear more stories when you come back to st.Louis!
