私の生徒さんの一人にWashUの剣道クラブを指導している方がいる関係から、毎年この季節にWashUでお茶のデモンストレーションをしてきましたが、昨年はコロナパンデミックにより、残念ながら実現できませんでした。今年は9月の日本祭の私たちのお茶のデモンストレーションをご覧になったJapan Peer Networkのメンバーの方から、また剣道クラブから、この二つのWasuUの学生のグループの依頼により、私たちのお茶のデモンストレーションが行われました。
Since one of our students is a kendo instructor at Washington University, we used to do tea ceremony demonstrations every year there except last year due to the pandemic.
This year, with the request from the kendo club and also the Japan Peer Network who saw our demonstration at the Japanese Festival last month, we were invited back to the university.
１部は、日本の『道』（どう）と呼ばれる文化、スポーツについて、また茶の湯の歴史や精神などをお話ししました。
２部は実際に薄茶風炉点前を披露しました。くじ引きで選ばれた5人の生徒さんには実際にお菓子とお茶を味わっていただき、お客様を体験していただきました。３部は質疑応答。 50名近くの学生さんたちの参加があり、熱心に聞き、見て、質問してくださり、とても気持ちの良い雰囲気の中でデモンストレーションをすることができました。
In the beginning of the presentation, we talked about the concept of “do” in Japanese culture and then the history and philosophy of the tea ceremony. Next, five students from the university were chosen by lottery to enjoy the sweets and tea during the tea ceremony demonstration. At the end of the presentation, we answered questions from the attendees. As usual, we were impressed with the enthusiasm and keen interest of the university students and had a great time introducing Japanese culture through the tea ceremony.
