昨年購入した我が家の小さな池の1株の水連が、今年6月から9月にかけて、合計12輪咲いてくれました。規則的ではないのですが、蕾を水中で準備し、ある朝『ぽっ』と咲いて、黄昏時になると静かに花を閉じます。3~4日間それを繰り返し、静かにまた水の中に消えていくのです。それを12回繰り返し、しばらく咲かないまま、すっかり秋めいてきて朝晩が冷え込むようになってきました。もう今年はこれでお終いかなと勝手に決め込んでいたところ10月に入って、蕾が顔を出し、10月2日にあの可憐な13輪目の花を咲かせてくれました。ところが驚いたことに、夏の間、池一面に浮かんでいた蓮の葉がその花を囲むように一点に集まってきているのです。風で拭き寄せられたのかしらとも思ったのですが、このところ、強い風が吹いた日はありませんでした。。。最後の力を振り絞って咲いてくれた一輪の蓮の花を蓮の葉たちが守り、支えているのでしょうか。
Small lotus plants bought last year finally bloomed in my garden at Junshin-an this summer. We enjoyed 12 flowers during the hot months, thinking the season was over. But to my surprised, a 13th flower bloomed this chilly October morning. A lotus plant usually opens in the morning and closes at dusk, repeating for several days, before quietly losing itself to the water. This late bloom, however, was mysteriously supported by its surrounding leaves, protecting its delicate pedals. We enjoyed its beauty as the last bloom of the season.
